Depression & Anxiety Q & A

What is depression and anxiety?

Depression and anxiety are different mental health disorders, but people with depression often experience similar symptoms to people with an anxiety disorder.

The most commonly diagnosed form of depression is major depressive disorder, in which you experience at least five of the nine common depressive symptoms. To receive a depression diagnosis, one of the symptoms must be an overwhelming feeling of sadness or the loss of interest in activities you normally enjoy.

Nearly 264 million people around the world live with depression. Depressive symptoms must be present for a minimum of two weeks.

The most commonly diagnosed form of anxiety is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), in which you experience excessive worry most days for at least six months. Anxiety may lead you to worry excessively about your health, work, social interactions, and even your daily routine.

Depression and anxiety interfere with both quality of life as well as the ability to participate in normal activities.

What are the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety?

Symptoms of depression and anxiety often overlap, although each disorder has its own set of signs and symptoms.

Depression symptoms

People with depression feel down or sad for a minimum of two weeks and creates difficulty in managing their daily life; thoughts of suicide may or may not be present. Physical and emotional symptoms caused by depression include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Pain or gastrointestinal problems without a clear cause
  • Trouble staying asleep or sleeping too much
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Persistent feelings of sadness or emptiness
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies
  • Thoughts of suicide

Anxiety symptoms

Everyone experiences worry from time to time, but if the fear and worry are chronic, leading to irrational thoughts, or interfere with your daily life, it’s likely a symptom of anxiety. Other physical and emotional symptoms caused by anxiety include:

  • Becoming easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty remembering things
  • Racing heart
  • Teeth grinding
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability or feeling on edge
  • Difficulty controlling fears
  • Feeling impending doom
  • Panic

You don’t have to suffer alone with depression and anxiety. If you experience any of the above symptoms on a regular basis, email Lori at Mind and Body Healthcare for an appointment or schedule an appointment online.

What are the treatment options for depression and anxiety?

Treatment for depression and anxiety is customized to your specific diagnosis and is designed to help you reduce the symptoms of both disorders. Depression and anxiety disorders often receive similar treatments, and Lori tailors therapy to help reduce the symptoms of both disorders.

Psychotherapy is an effective method of treating depression and anxiety, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to replace negative thought patterns with more useful thoughts.

Both depression and anxiety respond to medication treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Lori determines the best course of treatment for your specific symptoms and diagnosis.
